Planned Parenthood OKs merger of Ariz. branches
The Arizona Daily Star
Planned Parenthood organizations in Tucson and Phoenix — already the largest providers of reproductive health care services in the state — will merge in October with the goal of serving more women statewide.
The boards of directors of Planned Parenthood of Southern Arizona and Planned Parenthood of Central and Northern Arizona agreed to the merger last Saturday, officials said Friday.
"The best part about this merger is it will create the opportunity for the organization as a whole to serve more clients," said Megan Davis, chairwoman of the Southern Arizona board.

Politicians, high court renew abortion debate
Three decades ago, a youthful John Jakubczyk joined the Right to Life front lines as a "sidewalk counselor."
The U.S. Supreme Court had just legalized abortion, and Jakubczyk wanted to do all he could to talk women out of the procedure.
Gloria Feldt was championing the civil rights and feminist movements as one of the first five members of the National Organization for Women in western Texas. She wanted women to feel empowered to make their own choices.

 Biggest Gambler: Giuliani or McCain?
By Peter Bakke, editor, AZPoliticalNews.com & ElectaPres.com
This week, Time Magazine wrote,
Rudy Giuliani's decision to be more forthright about his pro-choice stance on abortion may be the boldest step of the Presidential campaign so far.
This might be true, but one could argue that Sen. McCain might be the bigger gambler by hitching his pro-war wagon to the conflict in Iraq in general and the 'surge' in particular.
It will take weeks or months before we find out who the better gambler is, but in the meantime both candidates appear to be losing ground in the polls to Mitt Romney while they wait for their bets to pay off.

High court decision good for Ariz. partial-birth abortion ban
The Arizona Daily Sun
PHOENIX -- The architect of Arizona's own ban on "partial-birth abortions" believes a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling on a similar federal law may finally allow enforcement of the state statute.
Sen. Karen Johnson, R-Mesa, said she is researching the effect of Wednesday's high court ruling which upheld the legality of a 2003 federal law. That measure, upheld as valid in a 5-4 ruling, makes it a crime to partially deliver a fetus and intentionally kill it.

McCain heads to Vegas, applauds abortion ruling
The Phoenix Business Journal
Arizona Sen. John McCain will make a campaign stop Thursday in Las Vegas. The Republican White House contender will keynote a GOP dinner at the Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino on the Vegas Strip, according to campaign officials.
Nevada is an early battleground in the 2008 presidential campaign.
McCain also applauded a 5-to-4 U.S. Supreme Court decision Wednesday that upheld a federal ban on partial birth/late-term abortions. Glendale Congressman Trent Franks and Mesa Congressman Jeff Flake as supported the decision. Abortion rights advocates -- including Democratic presidential contenders -- opposed Wednesday's court ruling.

South Carolina abortion measure draws Arizona interest
The Phoenix Business Journal
Anti-abortion advocates in Arizona are eyeing a plan being considered in another state that would require medical facilities and clinics that provide abortions to show ultrasounds of the fetus to prospective patients before they undergo the procedure.
That requirement has been put forward by social conservatives in South Carolina and has sparked some interest in Arizona. It is opposed by those favoring abortion rights.
On Thursday, according to the Associated Press, a South Carolina State Senate subcommittee dropped the ultrasound requirement from the bill, and it is expected to pass the full Senate in that form.

Ban on abortions at state colleges rapped by group
The Tucson Citizen
A group of University of Arizona medical school students and residents wants to challenge an Arizona law that makes it illegal to perform most abortions at medical facilities run by state universities.
The nearly 35-year-old law reads: Abortions may not "be performed at any facility under the jurisdiction of the Arizona Board of Regents unless such abortion is necessary to save the life of the woman having the abortion."
The UA chapter of Medical Students for Choice is "fighting for choice today" and educating the public about the need for more comprehensive medical training.

Move made on abortions for juveniles
The Arizona Daily Star
PHOENIX - Abortion foes are preparing to make yet another try to legislatively tighten the circumstances under which a minor can terminate a pregnancy without parental consent.
On a 5-2 vote, the Senate Committee on Public Safety and Human Services approved legislation that proponents say simply spells out what factors a judge may consider in determining whether a pregnant girl is mature enough to make the decision. Attorney Peter Gentala of the Center for Arizona Policy said it just codifies what the state Court of Appeals already has ruled.
But Eleanor Eisenberg, lobbyist for NARAL Pro-Choice Arizona, said the measure actually would make state law more restrictive than the court ruling, and would deny abortions to some minors.

 Poll: Abortion-rights support holds up
The Arizona Daily Star.
PHOENIX — Arizonans' attitudes about abortion have hardly changed at all since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized the procedure more than three decades ago.
A new statewide poll shows that 61 percent of voters questioned want to uphold the historic 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that overturned laws in many states, including Arizona, that made terminating a pregnancy a crime. Another 30 percent want the ruling overturned, with the balance saying they have no opinion.

The Arizona Republic.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Republican presidential candidate John McCain, looking to improve his standing with the party's conservative voters, said Sunday that the court decision legalizing abortion should be overturned.

Kathleen Parker : Flip-flop hits Romney — but should it stick?
The Arizona Daily Star has the story.
In a world wary of flip-floppery, it is nearly impossible for a politician to change his mind without appearing unprincipled.
Just ask John Kerry. Up front, I admit to enjoying a flip-flop moment now and again. Kerry made it too easy, with so many flip-flops that CBS News posted a "Top Ten" list during the 2004 presidential race. Famously, Kerry said: "I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it," referring to supplemental funding for the war in Iraq. The flip-flop slogan stuck to Kerry like Spandex because he couldn't stop contradicting himself.
Now the flip-flop has landed at the feet of Republican Mitt Romney, who is being compared to Kerry. Romney, you see, was pro-choice before he was pro-life.
