AZ Political news State official's use of e-mail falls in gray area

The Tucson Citizen

Richard Fimbres, head of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, used his state e-mail in announcing an immigration forum hosted by congressman Raúl Grijalva.

The Arizona Department of Administration checked into this and found that Fimbres was in his rights to use his state e-mail because it was not a "solicitation" of money or support, said Alan Ecker, an agency spokesman.

Technically, the forum is not political activity, per se, in a literal kind of way. The forum is being co-hosted by U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, the Illinois Democrat sponsoring the House immigration reform bill. The meeting is open to the public and sponsored by the Pima County Interfaith Council, Chicanos Por La Causa, the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Jewish Community Relations, Border Action Network, League of United Latin American Citizens and the Hispanic National Bar Association. They may not be political parties, but somehow The Minutemen were left off the invite list.

AZ Political news County starts Web site redactions

The Arizona Republic

Maricopa County is spending about $5.4 million to black out Social Security numbers listed on the many millions of public records it keeps on the Internet.

Complaints from county residents, and two known cases of people using the county site to steal Social Security numbers, prompted the redaction, officials said.

Arizona leads the country in identity-crime complaints to the Federal Trade Commission, and metro Phoenix ranks as the No. 1 urban area. Identity thieves victimized one in six adults in Arizona in the past five years, according to a private research company, Javelin Strategy & Research.

AZ Political news State official fears fallout from MySpace remarks

The Arizona Republic

Behind the "wild debaucherer" . . . A lesson to all bureaucrats, politicos and public figures: MySpace is not private space.

This week, the executive director of the Arizona Board of Fingerprinting, the agency that hears appeals from those who can't get the fingerprint clearance needed to work with children and other vulnerable citizens, is in the weird position of trying to explain his somewhat twisted sense of humor after a conservative blogger stumbled upon the profile he posted on his MySpace page. This is how Dennis Seavers, 31, described himself:

"Although I live a quiet daytime life as a state employee, my friends know me as a wild debaucherer, interested in self-promotion and enrichment. And by enrichment, I mean money. None of this self-esteem crap. Though afflicted by dipsomania, I stroll through crowds under the guise of sobriety. I volunteer as a Big Brother, only to indoctrinate children in the gothic splendors of lawlessness."

AZ Political news State official's MySpace page raises legislator's ire

The Tucson Citizen

PHOENIX - A state official claims he was only joking but a legislator wants to know more about the official's MySpace.com page that described him as a "wild debaucher" who volunteered to help children only to indoctrinate them in lawlessness. "It's exactly the opposite of me as a person," Dennis Seavers, executive director of the state fingerprinting board, said Monday. "If I had known that the public would see it, I never would have done it." The board is a small executive-branch agency that considers appeals from prospective teachers and others required to submit fingerprints for criminal background checks.

AZ Political news Giffords: Make S. Az 'solar Silicon Valley' Valley

The Tucson Citizen

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is launching a major solar power initiative in an apparent effort to make that one of her key issues in Congress.

Giffords, a Democrat from Tucson, made the announcement Friday at Global Solar Energy Inc., a Tucson manufacturer of wafer-thin solar products.

The state has the sun and she wants to do what others have claimed to want: turn solar power into an economic engine for Arizona.

AZ Political news Bill protects access to Web site’s estimates on home values

The East Valley Tribune

Lawmakers on Monday took action to make sure that Arizonans will be able to receive free estimates of their value of their homes.

The House agreed without dissent to block a state agency from preventing homeowners from getting such an estimate.

State representatives spelled out that an Internet Web site that gives a free opinion on the value of real estate is not engaged in “appraisal.” The stipulation, crafted by Rep. Michele Reagan, R-Scottsdale, was tacked on to SB1291, which makes various changes in state appraisal laws.

AZ Political news Bill seeks to help cell phone users

The East Valley Tribune.

Hell hath no fury like a state legislator whose cell phone has eaten her calendar. That’s what happened to Sen. Pamela Gorman. And the Anthem Republican said repeated efforts to get that and other problems resolved proved fruitless.

And that, she said, left her with two options: live with what she said was substandard equipment and service or move to another cell phone provider. But that would result in an early termination fee, which Gorman said effectively traps the customer.

So Gorman is pushing legislation that would mean a customer of any cell phone company violating any terms of the contract is free to walk away without a penalty.
