AZ Political news Jon Kyl: Arizona National Scenic Trail Act

By Jon Kyl
May 7, 2007

I am pleased to join my fellow Arizona Senator John McCain in introducing the Arizona National Scenic Trail Act. This bill would amend the National Trails System Act to designate the Arizona Trail as a national scenic trail. In 1968, the U.S. Congress established the National Trails System to promote the preservation of historical resources and outdoor areas. National scenic and historic trails may be designated only by an act of Congress.

Senator McCain and I have been working on Arizona Trail legislation since 2003. Previous forms of the bill focused on conducting a feasibility study to determine whether the trail is physically possible and financially feasible. In the meantime, the Arizona Trail Association and its state and federal partners have continued to develop the trail with national designation in mind, so I don’t believe a feasibility study is now required.

AZ Political news Bill seeks oversight of conservation areas

The Tucson Citizen

Four members of Congress have sponsored a bill to give national conservation areas, national wilderness areas and national monuments more security under permanent management.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management, whose job has been more about doling out land for economic ventures than environmental protection, has been stuck managing these lands.

The bill, co-sponsored by Rep. Raúl Grijalva of Tucson, would establish the National Conservation Land System and make protection of these lands permanent and create an agency specifically to oversee them.

AZ Political news Down payment on respectability

The Arizona Republic.

Regular visitors to our national parks know the score: Our priceless natural and cultural resources aren't in tip-top condition, cheapening the visitor experience.

Trails need upkeep. Deteriorating historic buildings require preservation. Some park facilities aren't open seven days a week. Invasive plant species put treasured flora at risk.

AZ Political news Morlock: Greens giddy over Grijalva's clout with land

The Tucson Citizen has the story.

U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva has a gavel. We'll see how ready he is to use it as he presides over more than 25 percent of the U.S. surface area.

The Arizona Democrat starts his third term representing southern and western Arizona as the newly named chairman of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands. He's in charge, he jokes, of "pretty much everything west of the Mississippi."

Seriously. There are big jobs, and there are big jobs. Grijalva is the gatekeeper of policy affecting 600 million acres of federal land.
