AZ Political news Union ads touting Giffords follow GOP's May blitz

The Arizona Daily Star

No need to check your calendar. It's still 2007 — but as far as political types are concerned, it's already 2008.

That's why this weekend you might catch some television commercials supporting Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who isn't up for re-election for another 16 months.

The ads are paid for by the Service Employees International Union, which is spending $400,000 nationwide this weekend on ads supporting 12 incumbent Democrats. The focus: health-care and minimum-wage accomplishments.

AZ Political news Political ad asks, 'Where's the fence?'

The Arizona Daily Star

Grassfire.org, a conservative advocacy organization, has targeted Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl of Arizona, among other U.S. senators, in television and Internet ads that ask, "Where's the fence?"

The 30-second spots, filmed at South Mountain Park near Ahwatukee Foothills, debuted Monday on the Internet and will begin a three-day run on national cable news networks today.

"It's going to give folks the opportunity to see the spot multiple times and respond to it," said Ron De Jong, director of communications for Grassfire. "And there is no question that they are going to do it. There are going to be a lot of angry Arizonans calling the offices of Kyl and McCain."

AZ Political news Ad campaign reveals horrors of 'devil's drug'

The Arizona Republic

The campaign, called the Arizona Meth Project, is a collaborative effort among 10 counties to saturate the media with startling anti-meth messages that authorities hope will convince teens not to try the drug - "not even once."

"I think it could have an impact. This is more honest and more effective. Instead of just saying 'don't,' it shows what will happen," said 14-year-old Daniel Williams, who was one of 28 Scottsdale middle-school students allowed to preview the ads Tuesday.

The graphic ads got their start as part of the Montana Meth Project, an in-your-face campaign launched two years ago. Organizers in Montana say the media and educational blitz has dramatically reduced meth-related crime and changed attitudes.
