« Previous | Home | Next » August 23, 2007Illegal Immigration...Will It Ever Stop? When will pro-amnesty fans get a clue? For far too long opponents to granting citizenship to the nearly 12 million undocumented individuals in our country have been labeled nativists and protectionists without a clear understanding of their arguments nor the definitions of these labels as they are intended. The Wall Street Journal, an otherwise welcome voice of reason within the mainstream media cacophony, produced this zinger on yesterday’s editorial page:
Snappy. But does anyone truly believe that these candidates want a wall put up around the country as Lou Dobbs has propounded? Let us be sensible. I, like most who favor a realistic immigration policy, recognize that simply putting up a border and beginning the deportation busing is a viable option. But it is a start. Is it too much to expect that our elected leaders who have passed the authorizing legislation to mollify us would actually carry through on their promises to secure the borders? What is more, if we are truly a nation of laws, why can we not enforce our laws with illegal entrants? To claim these immigrants are a victim of a classification not a specific crime is a ruse that was played in 1986. Nonsense. These individuals are committing the crimes that produce their class: illegal entry into our country. If they were not, how else did they get here? To claim nativism as the cause is the sort of demagoguery that muddies the debate. Most individuals on the anti-citizenship are good, welcoming people who just want others to play by the rules as they do themselves. The backlog for visa applicants, who want to join family already residing in the United States, has stretched in some instances as long as 18 years. Those law-abiding folks are waiting patiently only to see others merely cross the border to game the system. Supporting their patience is not racism, it is what is fair. Policy makers must step back from the mudslinger, though we at AZPoliticalNews.com doubt that will happen soon, and take a sober look at the rationality of securing our borders first, dealing with illegals and creating a sustainable policy that does not contribute to future law breaking.
