Taxpayer shelling out big bucks for Mesa council dinners
The Arizona Republic
From sandwiches to steak dinners, taxpayers are shelling out thousands of dollars each year so that city and town councils and some municipal employees won't go hungry during evening meetings.
Scottsdale spends the most to feed its council and staff. With 46 meetings and a total bill of $9,530 this past fiscal year, they spent about $207 a meeting, Scottsdale spokesman Pat Dodds said.
Scottsdale resident Mike Merrill said feeding the City Council is a waste of taxpayer money.
"I get to sit there through their meetings for hours upon hours and I don't get to eat," Merrill said. "Bring a bag lunch like the rest of us do. You know what days you're going to be there - eat before or bring something with you."
