Arizona lawmakers seek billions in federal earmarks
The Arizona Daily Sun
MESA, Ariz. - Some of Arizona's Congressional members are seeking billions of dollars to pay for special projects in their districts this year as other state lawmakers say they aren't seeking a single dime in earmarks.
The difference in style comes amid increased scrutiny of earmarks, or, taxpayer funds appropriated for specific projects in the backyards of lawmakers.
Earmarks recently blossomed under GOP control of Congress, much to the dismay of conservative stalwarts. House Democrats promised to greatly reduce the number and cost of earmarks, and President Bush is demanding they be cut in half.
While veteran lawmakers in Arizona, including Republicans John McCain, John Shadegg and Jeff Flake, aren't seeking any earmarks, other lawmakers are.
