Arizona congressman looks to take a bite out of black-market bear parts

The Phoenix Business Journal

An Arizona lawmaker wants to take a bite out of the global black market for bear parts. U.S. Reps. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and John Campbell, R-Calif., have put forward federal legislation prohibiting the import and export of bear parts.

Bears' gallbladders and bile are used in herbal folk remedies in Asia. There is a thriving black market for such goods in China and other Asian countries. Grijalva and Campbell want to stop the import of bear parts from Asia and the export of such products from the U.S.

Thirty-four states already have prohibitions on bear parts trade, but the lawmakers wants a federal restriction.
