Patrol beefs up coverage near its I-19 checkpoint
The Arizona Daily Star
The U.S. Border Patrol has agreed to devote more agents and technology to areas close to a checkpoint on Interstate 19 north of Tubac in response to a request from Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz.
The agency has assigned three agents per shift to patrol the Tubac area, four agents per shift to patrol the area north of the checkpoint at kilometer post 42, and 11 agents on horseback to patrol the areas flanking the checkpoint, said Gustavo Soto, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman.
Officials have also placed ground sensors, sky watch towers equipped with day and nighttime cameras, and ground surveillance radar units, which are mobile platforms mounted in the back of Border Patrol trucks. The additional resources were allocated within days of Giffords' May 14 letter, Soto said.
