Napolitano will receive plan for saving forests
The Tucson Citizen
MESA - Officials working on a plan for the state's forests say time is running out to save Arizona's 19.4 million wooded acres.
"When we look at the rate of the loss of Arizona's forested lands since 2000 due to insects, disease and wildfire, it's been almost 5 percent a year," state forester Kirk Rowdabaugh said. "Obviously, you can't keep that up for more than 20 years and have anything left at all."
Tom Klabunde, deputy supervisor on the Tonto National Forest, said, "It's not too late. Forests are very resilient, as most ecosystems are."
