Our Opinion: Legislature dawdles as transportation woes worsen

Arizona is the nation's fastest-growing state, and its roads, highways and rails are woefully underfunded, needing an estimated $61 billion worth of improvements over the next two decades. At least $20 billion of those needs are unfunded.

Yet the Legislature is without a comprehensive plan for funding roads. And lawmakers are hesitant to even ask voters to approve needed tax increases.

This is an appalling lack of leadership on a matter that is crucial to the state's economic well-being.
